Functional Skills or GCSE maths resit — which should you take?

Two routes to proving your maths. Here's how to pick.

What each one is

A GCSE maths resit is another attempt at the same GCSE, graded 1–9, with a grade 4 usually counting as a 'standard pass'. Functional Skills Level 2 is a separate, more applied qualification focused on using maths in real, everyday situations.

Both are widely recognised, but they're used for different things, so the right choice depends on what you need the qualification for.

Which one counts for your goal

If a course, university or employer specifically asks for 'GCSE maths grade 4', Functional Skills won't substitute for that — you'll need the GCSE. Check the exact wording of the requirement before you decide.

For many apprenticeships and jobs, Functional Skills Level 2 is accepted and can be a faster, more confidence-building route, especially if exams have knocked you before.

Which suits how you learn

Functional Skills is very applied — money, measures, data — which many learners find more motivating than abstract algebra. If GCSE maths has felt disconnected from real life, Functional Skills can be a better fit.

If you're close to a grade 4 and need the GCSE specifically, a focused resit is worth it. Either way, the study approach is the same: find your gaps, practise little and often, and rehearse the real exam.

Still not sure?

Confirm what your destination actually requires, in writing, then pick the route that meets it with the least friction. ResitReady starts with Functional Skills Level 2 and GCSE-resit foundation maths, so you can build the underlying skills either way.
